How to Convert Hourly Wages to Annual Salary in the U.S.

If you’re working hourly, it’s important to know how much your wage translates to annually. Whether you’re budgeting, comparing job offers, or planning your finances, understanding the yearly salary from an hourly wage is crucial. The calculation for converting an hourly wage to a yearly salary is simple, especially for full-time workers who typically work 40 hours a week and 52 weeks a year.

Here’s the basic formula:

$$\text{Annual Salary} = \text{Hourly Wage} \times \text{Hours per Week} \times \text{Weeks per Year}$$

For most full-time U.S. workers:

  • Full-Time Hours: 40 hours per week
  • Work Weeks: 52 weeks per year (assuming no unpaid time off)

Example Salary Calculations for Common Hourly Rates

  • $15 an hour is $31,200 per year
    $15 x 40 hours x 52 weeks = $31,200/year

  • $20 an hour is $41,600 per year
    $20 x 40 hours x 52 weeks = $41,600/year

  • $25 an hour is $52,000 per year
    $25 x 40 hours x 52 weeks = $52,000/year

  • $30 an hour is $62,400 per year
    $30 x 40 hours x 52 weeks = $62,400/year

  • $40 an hour is $83,200 per year
    $40 x 40 hours x 52 weeks = $83,200/year

These examples are based on full-time work with no unpaid leave. If you work fewer than 40 hours per week or take time off, your annual income will be lower.

Salary-to-Hourly Conversion

If you know your annual salary and want to convert it to an hourly rate, the formula is the reverse:

$$\text{Hourly Wage} = \frac{\text{Annual Salary}}{\text{Hours per Week} \times \text{Weeks per Year}}$$

For example:

  • $50,000 a year is about $24.04 per hour
    $50,000 ÷ (40 hours x 52 weeks) = $24.04/hour

  • $60,000 a year is about $28.85 per hour
    $60,000 ÷ (40 hours x 52 weeks) = $28.85/hour

  • $70,000 a year is about $33.65 per hour
    $70,000 ÷ (40 hours x 52 weeks) = $33.65/hour

  • $100,000 a year is about $48.08 per hour
    $100,000 ÷ (40 hours x 52 weeks) = $48.08/hour
